The Hatton Avenue Gallery was founded in February, 2015 by proprietor Jim Willis to showcase his own paintings, as well as the works of select local and regional artists. The Gallery leans heavily toward accessible, representational two-dimensional works, primarily oil paintings. We want the work we hang to be more than merely decorative, but never confrontational or condescending, and seldom obscure.
The Gallery is housed in a 900 square foot building that we believe to be over 100 years old. No one person seems to know the whole history of the place. We don’t even know for sure if it was built in Spreckels or transported here—as many of the local “sugar beet” houses were—after the founding of the town.
Just since the 1950s, the building has been a home (more than once), a doctor’s office, an art school, a Montessori school, a charity’s office, and a retail clothing outlet. And now, for a time, it’s the newest art gallery in Monterey County. We hope you’ll come and enjoy it.
